PUTNAM'S TROPICAL MOTEL

San Leon, TX, 2012

The client for this project provided an interesting design criteria.  As a licensed arborist, the client desired a motel in a lush tropical garden setting with a particular preference for palms.  Secondly, as a native to the Galveston Bay area, the client desired a reference to the Victorian character of the historic homes in the area, especially Galveston, but with a tropical flare expressed in the color palette.  The compact site was a challenge, but the design arrived at a balance between the units and garden juxtaposing an abstract orthogonal pattern defined by the units with an abstract curvilinear courtyard defined by garden, hardscape, and swimming pool.
